Windowscreen Repair & Replacement

Window screens are incredibly important, but we often overlook them. A good screen serves lots of purposes. The most obvious use for screens is to keep pests and wildlife out; however, they also keep pollens and other things out of the air you’re breathing. Finally, good screens help filter sunlight, helping to keep your house cooler. There are several aspects of homeownership that ask for your attention.  With your mind occupied on all of that, it’s easy to overlook your window screens.  At Wonder Window Cleaning in San Diego, one of the most common things we see out in the field is a broken, damaged or brittle window screen. Here are 3 signs you need to repair or replace your window screens:

Age

Sometimes screen damage isn’t noticeable from afar but up close you can see how the screen material has worn due to the elements. Take a moment to do an inspection of your window screens and screen doors to see what condition they are in. When you book a window cleaning with us we will always bring to your attention anything we think needs to be repaired or replaced.

Visible Damage

Damaged screens not only are unsightly but any hole, rip or opening can allow pests an access point into your home. With summer fast approaching take a moment to inspect all your window screens and door screens. If you see visible damage or if your window screens appear to be brittle and worn or frayed, it’s time to get then replaced!

Broken Frames

Your door and window screens are help together by a metal or wooden frame. Over time due to sun and environmental damage, these frames can erode and deteriorate; this is especially the case if you live near the beach. This deterioration causes your window screens and door screens to come loose and sometimes warp. In this case we recommend you replace the frames completely. You also have to replace the screen at this time if it’s in poor condition.

Inspection

When we arrive at your home we always do a quick inspection of your window screens. We will point out any issues we see and give you options on how we can best handle them. Most of the time broken or severely damaged window screens can’t be cleaned and sometimes are better left untouched. There is occasion where we can do a gentle cleaning with minimal contact so as not to cause more damage.

Although, we do not repair or replace window screens we can recommend the names of a few companies who can repair or replace them for you.

Blown or Failed Window Seals – How to Tell if You Need to Replace Your Windows

Foggy Windows

Have you ever noticed no matter how often you get your windows cleaned the fog on the windows always reappears? That intermittent fogging during fluctuation in temperatures is an indication you have what’s known as a “blown seal” in your insulated glass window or otherwise know as “dual paned window failure.” Here’s what happens:

Window Manufacturing

Double-pane window have two panes that are held apart by a metal strip. That strip is adhered to the two glass panes with a flexible sealant material.

During manufacturing, moisture is evacuated from between the glass panes as they’re sealed together, forming a dead air space. The two glass panes and the dead air work in tandem to give the windowpanes their additional insulating value and help keep the window warmer than one with a single pane of glass. Depending on the type of design of the window, inert argon gas is used between the panes to increase the insulating value.

Dual Paned Window Failure

In theory the insulated glass is designed to have quite a long life span, just as long as the windows themselves. However, sometimes there are flaws during manufacturing or some type of impact occurs to the window. This can cause small openings to appear in the seal allowing air and moisture to enter the space and the argon gas to escape out. This leads to temperature and moisture fluctuations within the panes of glass that lead to permanent fogging, streaks, lines, spots, and oxidation.

If you have windows that are damaged call the manufacturer or contractor because they may still be under warranty. If your warranty has expired call a glass installation expert to reseal or replace the window completely. Replacing the window entirely will make your home more energy efficient.

How to Prepare for a Window Cleaning

Windows are an asset in any home, producing natural light and allowing for views of the outside. But when windows are dirty, their aesthetic and health benefits are significantly less. Fortunately, companies like Wonder Window Cleaning in San Diego are here to help. After you schedule a window cleaning appointment, do these three things to prepare for their arrival.

INTERIOR WINDOWS

For the interior portion of the window cleaning it’s very helpful if you please remove all items off the windowsills such as, picture frames, plants/planters, other decorative items that are fragile.

Please keep in mind that side tables should be moved away from windows, as well as fragile, delicate lamps that might tip over.

If you have Bay or Garden windows with shelving (usually in the kitchen or bathroom) please clear all objects off shelving and around the window area, so we can have clear access to all the glass.

Moving all furniture in the home that may obstruct access to the window is key in having a smooth seamless window cleaning. We are happy to help you move larger items such as large beds, couches, or cabinets. For furniture that isn’t so easy to move we always try our best to work around it and usually with great success.

EXTERIOR WINDOWS

When it comes to exterior window cleaning having clear access to all windows is important as is having enough space cleared away for us to position and set-up our ladders. Here are a few things you can do help make the exterior window cleaning safe and easy.

Patio furniture – please move all furniture away from windows and sliding doors. Please leave at least a 3-foot access area so we can easily set up our ladders and other equipment.

Sheds – If you have a shed that is obstructing one or more windows please know we cannot safely access and clean these windows. Moving the shed ahead of time can ensure we will be able to reach the windows.

Planters – Please move all planters away from windows, leaving enough space for someone to get behind it with a ladder if necessary and clean.

Trees and Shrubs – if you notice you have trees and shrubs growing up against the windows or even growing onto the windows now is a great opportunity to cut them back. Trying to clean a window with large shrubs near it is not only dangerous but can also be a painful experience and cause damage to your plants.

Toy boxes, pet bedding and food dishes should also be moved away from sliding doors during your appointment.

PETS

We love pets and we love meeting your pets, it’s often the highlight of our day. We know not all pets are happy to see us because ladders and equipment sometimes scares them. If you know your pet is easily scared or shy around strangers we ask that you please give them a safe secure place to stay while we are at your home. This ensures they don’t run out, get lost or feel stressed when they see us.

If you are not able to move these items due to health reasons we will be happy to assist you, please let us know ahead of your schedules appointment. We hope these helpful tips have prepared you well for your appointment. If you still have questions just give us a ring and we’ll be happy to help. Thank you for choosing Wonder Window Cleaning!
